New tools and abstractions have opened up radically new paradigms for application architecture. Among these is the new technique of developing serverless apps — applications composed of functions that can be called on demand (and scaled) using tools like Docker Swarm.
Ben Firshman demonstrated this at the recent DockerCon 2016, converting an application composed of five long-running services into an app with just two long-running services (and three Docker containers that are run “on-demand”).
Firshman writes: “This application has fewer long-running services that need managing, and by its very nature scales up automatically in response to demand (up to the size of your Swarm!).
